A new study by a University of California, San Diego study on men with erectile dysfunction finds that Viagra has a half-life of about 4.8 hours, and its effects are similar to those seen with other ED medications.

The researchers also found that the men who took the high-dose sildenafil had a significantly higher percentage of the time they took the drug.
"We found that the half-life of sildenafil is comparable to that of the placebo," said study author Dr. John B. Tatum, a senior investigator at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. "The half-life of Viagra is the same. The half-life of sildenafil is much longer than that of Viagra."
Tatum was not involved in the study, and has no known conflicts of interest.

Some studies suggest that people taking sildenafil for a month or two may have an increased risk of erectile dysfunction, Woodcock said.
“The risks that people are going through when taking Viagra are that they could have other health issues,” she said.
But Woodcock said there is a growing body of evidence that Viagra can increase blood flow to the penis, and that it’s not safe to take. “There is a strong association between the use of Viagra and the development of erectile dysfunction,” Woodcock said.
In fact, she’s not recommending Viagra for men who are taking it because it may increase blood flow to the penis.
“I don’t think the use of Viagra is going to cause these problems,” Woodcock said.
